5 Dinner Etiquettes You Should Know

We all love to enjoy a good meal and dine out, but just like everything else, there are social rules to follow when dining out. Here are five etiquettes you should keep in mind when at the table, to show that you’re very mindful and very demure

1. Phone on Silent, Eyes on Company

Before you sit, switch your phone to silent or vibrate. It’s a small habit that shows you value the conversation and keeps everyone focused on the meal. Don’t be that person whose ringtone becomes the soundtrack of the night.

2. Mind Your Elbows, Not Your Posture

Rest your forearms lightly on the table, just don’t plant your elbows. It keeps you engaged without crowding the shared space, especially during conversations. Good Posture goes a long way in how you’re seen at a table.

3. Match the Group’s or Date’s Eating Pace

Take your cues from the slowest eater. Eating too quickly can make others feel rushed; matching the pace encourages relaxed conversations between bites. And overall improves the entire vibe of the group.

4. Bring Latecomers Into the Fold for Group Dining

When someone arrives late — thanks, Lagos traffic — pause briefly to fill them in and give introductions. It’s a simple way to make them feel immediately welcome. You don’t want anyone feeling left out or awkward.

5. Acknowledge Service with a Thoughtful Tip

While this is optional at a lot of restaurants in Lagos, it does go a long way in showing appreciation ot the servers or staff. At the end of the meal, thank your server with a quick “well done” and a ₦500–₦1,000 tip, even if a service charge is included. It’s practical, appreciated, and keeps Lagos hospitality running smoothly.
