Clubbing in Lagos has very little to do with dancing and more to do with making a statement or simply making it through the night. But for every well-dressed crowd, there’s always one person who didn’t clock the tea. Don’t be that person. Here’s what to avoid wearing to Lagos clubs if you value your dignity.
1. Slippers
Unless your toes are on a yacht, keep them hidden. Lagos clubs have dress codes that can be as strict as immigration. For men, especially, slippers or any open-toe footwear won’t pass. For the ladies, please keep those comfortable slip-ons at home.
2. Leather, Fur, or Warm Clothing
We get it, you want to look international. But Lagos’ heat will humble even the most fashion-forward. Anything heavy or heat-trapping will have you drenched by midnight. Stick to breathable fabrics and outfits that let whatever tiny breeze the club has actually touch your skin. Your body will thank you.
3. Shorts and Sleeveless for guys
You’re not at a family picnic. Shorts and sleeveless might work for day parties or beach raves, but in most Lagos clubs, they’re an instant bouncer pet peeve. You can save them for other occasions or casual Fridays. Nightlife calls for something sharper and highlife-coded.
4. Lace and Ankara
Except it’s your wedding after-party, don’t pull up to the club in Lace or Ankara. Aside from the fact that you’ll stick out, the bouncer might not politely tell you to back off. We do love our aso-ebi and traditional outfits, but you can leave that for ‘Owambe’. You’re welcome to try tho.
5. A Smile
To be honest, everybody’s eyes ‘dey red’. Smiling too much in Lagos can make you look suspicious, especially when you’re ‘outside’. You don’t want to look like it’s your first time in the club. In Lagos clubs, everyone is a superstar until proven otherwise. So, maintain steeze and composure at all times.
If you’re able to follow these tips, then you’re ready to take on Lagos nightlife. Always remember to have fun, but Lagos 101: avoid embarrassment.
