Lagos is a fast city, and there’s no doubt about that. No matter the time of day, the city is alive and active. Cue Ramadan, and things shift almost immediately. Sometimes these changes are subtle, but if you don’t know Lagos. Here are 7 things that change in Lagos during Ramadan.
How many have you noticed?
1. Peace Be Unto You

No, it’s not Asake’s hit song. Literally everyone in Lagos becomes a bit more understanding and patient. From early morning traffic to 5:00 PM rush hour, people, especially those observing the fast, are simply trying to get through the day. Even bus conductors become semi-polite.
2. Sleeping On Duty

One of the many places you can easily spot someone observing the fast is at work. By 2:00 PM, there’s a sharp drop in energy. Movement is minimal, and you could probably catch a few of your colleagues either struggling to stay awake or already fast asleep—yakubu manage!
3. Oblee Delays

Lagos nightlife doesn’t stop during Ramadan, it just shifts. Some regular ballers and nightlife kings suddenly disappear, and clubs will start adjusting their opening hours to accommodate the new Lagos timetable—when Odogwu is away, Oblee delays.
4. Timeline Cleanse

When fasting hits, you can tell from the IG stories and Snapchat highlights. The strobe lights with a hypeman chanting “oblee” in the background are nowhere to be found. Only Surah quotes and words of encouragement here.
5. Giving Increases

What’s Ramadan in Lagos without generosity? Ramadan is usually marked by the willingness of people to help those in need. There is a collective culture of giving that takes over Lagos. Whether it’s food or clothes, someone is always giving out something. Even your suya guy suddenly adds “small extra” without arguing.
6. ‘PG’ Wardrobe

Ramadan comes with not just a change in attitude but also a change in wardrobe. From the Odogwus to the Baddies. You’ll notice a lot more abayas, caftans, and jalabiyas on the streets of Lagos. Those observing the fast are keeping it PG—ashawo dresses and mini skirts are on sabbatical.
7. Business Downtime

Ramadan in Lagos changes the schedule of a lot of businesses. Mostly those in the hospitality, fitness, and entertainment sectors. Some adapt to downtime, while others use the reduced traffic to handle maintenance or renovations.
Lagos is like water, always adapting to the state of its environment. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, you’re not imagining it. It’s just another Ramadan in Lagos.
Ramadan Kareem to everyone practicing.
