10 Things To Know Before Attending Your First Rave in Lagos

Lagos raves have their own unspoken rules, here’s what you need to know before your first one.

If you’ve never been to a rave in Lagos, just know this:  it’s not a party, it’s an experience. From the music to the energy to the people, nothing about it will feel familiar. That’s the point. So before you step in, here are 10 things you need to know

1. It’s Not Afrobeats

If you’re waiting for the DJ to “play Asake or Wizkid,” you’ve already missed the point. Raves run on house, techno, and electronic music that will feel genuinely confusing for the first hour. You’ll stand there like, “Is this a prank?” Don’t fight it, just pretend like you belong there and let the music reach into your soul and rearrange your personality.

2. Keep Your Mind Open

You will see things. Outfits, behaviors, energy — none of which the invite prepared you for. The correct response to all of it is to look away and face your front. You didn’t come here to judge. Whatever happens at a Lagos rave, stays at a Lagos rave.

3. The Party Starts When Responsible People Are Sleeping

Showing up at 10pm? Cute. You’ll walk in, see about twelve people, and immediately question your life choices. A Lagos rave doesn’t actually start until somewhere between 1am and 2am, when the crowd stops looking confused and the energy shifts completely. Come late, leave later. Don’t be surprised if you’re still oontz-oontz-ing at 6am while your mates are ‘jumping bus’ to the office.

4. Go With The Right People

Your first rave experience is almost entirely determined by your company. The right energy makes everything click. But imagine going with that friend who ghosts in the middle of the party, or the one who complains about the music from the moment you arrive, or the one who wants to leave at midnight. If your friends have vibes and energy, you’ll leave with a core memory. If they don’t, you’ll leave with a headache.

5. Dress Comfortably

Light clothing. Breathable fabrics. Comfortable shoes, emphasis on comfortable because there are no chairs, no tables, and no mercy. You will stand. You will dance. You will sweat like you owe someone money. So, this is not the night for a buss down wig and heels, or anything that requires you to sit after 15 minutes.

6. Always Hydrate

You will be dancing for hours in a packed room in Lagos, a city that decided humidity was a personality trait. It gets hot really fast. Add the crowd and the music and suddenly you’re sweating like a Christmas goat. At this point water is not a beverage, it’s a survival strategy. So, make sure you’re hydrating especially if you plan to drink. You don’t want to ruin your night.

7. Mind Your Business

A Lagos rave has its own ecosystem with its own unspoken rules and the main one is: enjoy yourself and let everyone else do the same.  You might see things that would make you question your sanity or ask if you are still in Lagos. The answer is a simple unspoken rule, mind your business.

8. Protect Yourself

While the rave scene in Lagos is largely safe, you still need to be safety conscious. Keep all your belongings close. Do not accept drinks from strangers, no matter how friendly or polite they seem. Stay aware of your surroundings even while you’re deep in the music. The vibe is immaculate but the city doesn’t pause for raves, so avoid stories that touch.

9. Nobody Is Looking At You

That self-conscious energy you walked in with? Leave it at the entrance. Nobody is clocking your dance moves, judging your two-step, or paying you any attention whatsoever. Everyone is in their own world. In fact, the person standing at the side observing is the strange one. The only crime at a rave is not dancing. Don’t be the odd one out.

10. You Will Either Be Converted or Traumatized

There is no middle ground. Your first rave will either make you understand why people do this every weekend, or it will make you say “never again” with full conviction and zero regret. Both outcomes are valid. Understand that raves are not for everyone and that’s okay, the only way to find out if it’s for you is to go.
