Top Stage Plays to Watch in Lagos This December

Happy holidays Lagos!!
It’s officially the season we’ve all been waiting for, from back to back concerts headlined by our favourite artistes to International guest appearances and of course the drama that comes with the season. We’ve been having a ball in the city of Lagos!

If you are looking to take a break from the crowded concerts and need something more laid back, live and fun, we have curated a list of exciting stage productions you should see this season. It’s also perfect for a family day out and you can watch a repeat as the shows are on multiple times.

QUEEN MOREMI RELOADED

Moremi Ajasoro

Queen Moremi is a play about the Yoruba Land Heroine “Moremi Ajasoro” who made a priceless sacrifice for the Ancestral home of Yorubaland, Ile-Ife.
Moremi Ajasoro, born to a powerful hunter in Ile-Ife was a queen who offered herself to be captured by the Ugbo tribe (not be confused with Igbos) who were always raiding Ile-Ife. Confident of her wit and beauty, she made a supreme sacrifice of offering herself to be captured by the raiders, after which their King married her, paving way for her to secure intelligence related to the enemies’ battle strategy which was eventually used by the people of Ile-Ife to liberate themselves from the raiders.
The show is on at the Lagos Continental Hotel from the 24th of December to 2nd of January 2019

FELA’S REPUBLIC

Fela’s Republic tells the story of the Legend Fela and his 27 wives in the Kalakuta.

OMG THE MUSICAL

OMG the Musical is a fantasia on Three Nigerian Women, An historical, educative masterpiece from the stables of Declassical Arts & Entertainment, one of the biggest production companies in Nigeria.

HERTITUDE

Hertitude focuses on three sisters, Kesiena, Rume and Ogor who were raised by a single mother who was impulsive and angry most of the time. They reunite at Rume’s private club after their mother suffers a fatal heart attack. Rume is a club owner and a pimp who bemoans the emotional deprivation and mental abuse she suffered in the hands of her mother. Kesiena is the judgemental first-class graduate who chose to be a kept woman for her high society billionaire husband. Ogor is Nollywood’s sweetheart with seemingly perfect work and marital life. Ogor shocks her sisters with stories about her affair with a Director of Photography and her carefully curated fake life on social media. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with their individual demons while coping with their mother’s ill health and eventual demise. Series of betrayals eventually disrupts their already dysfunctional lives.

MAMMA MIA

Mamma Mia’ is the romantic comedy musical about youth, love, freedom, friendship, tolerance, music and celebration. The jukebox (sing-along) musical is based on the songs of the hugely successful 70s & 80s Swedish pop group, ABBA.

THE FIVE MAIDS OF FADAKA


he Five Maids of Fadaka, written by Ayo Jaiyesimi and performed by THESPIAN Family Theatre & Production, is a total theatre concept with a rich blend of folklore, dance and music that naturally transports the audience to a cross-cultural Nigerian Village.

ADA THE COUNTRY


Ada the Country is a story of survival of a young woman who lost everything there could be in a single event of fire outbreak but her will to overcome. Ada the Country is a story of women coming through for their like, where the survival of an unfortunate woman drew the sympathy and support of other women, who rallied around her through the thick and thin in her life journey. Written by Tolulope Sonuga and Produced and Directed by Kemi Lala Akindoju
