Lagos, get ready for an immersive cinematic experience: My Father’s Shadow, director Akinola Davies Jr.’s emotionally rich debut, will be released in Nigerian cinemas on September 19th, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment.
The film made international headlines as the first Nigerian feature to be selected for the Cannes Official Selection (Un Certain Regard), earning the Caméra d’Or Special Mention award. Critics have praised its lyrical storytelling, heartbreaking depth, and cinematic vision
The Guardian dubbed it a “subtle and intelligent coming-of-age tale” while IndieWire described it as “a beautifully remembered drama about a fateful day trip into Lagos.”
Set against the politically charged atmosphere of 1993, two brothers spend one unforgettable day with their estranged father, traveling through Lagos. Shot entirely on 16mm film, the production is both nostalgic and urgent, depicting Lagos as a living, breathing cinematic character. The film was written by Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate Wale Davies and co-written by his brother Akinola Davies Jr.
Akinola Davies Jr. admits,”I actually cried when I read my brother’s script… this is a testament to the talent in our industry. Point a camera at anything in Lagos, and it becomes cinematic.” He continues: “Our stories don’t need to be sensationalised—they’re powerful enough as they are.”
Sope Disiru leads the cast, with first-time actors Godwin and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo giving stirring performances. The cast also features Nollywood legends and up-and-comers alike, including Ayo Lijadu, Greg “Teddy Bear” Ojefua, Uzoamaka Power, Winifred Efon, and Olarotimi Fakunle. The production was powered by a crew that was over 80% Nigerian, including Lagos-based Fatherland Productions and production partnerships with Element Pictures, BBC Film, BFI, and MUBI.
Mark your calendars for September 19th.
