10 Easy Ways to Rage-Bait Lagosians

Every Lagosian has a trigger. Say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing, or park in the wrong spot, and you’ll find out fast. Here are 10 guaranteed ways to annoy anyone in this city.

If you’ve spent any real time in Lagos, you already know some things just aren’t worth saying out loud. Every true Lagosian knows that mentioning certain things or moving in certain places would likely get the next person into a mood you may not recover from. This city runs on very specific pressure points, and honestly, most of them are hilarious once you notice the pattern.

We’ve rounded up ten of the most reliable ones. If you’ve lived here for more than a minute, you’ll recognize at least half of these from personal experience — maybe even from both sides.

Here are 10 things that can really get to every Lagosian

1. When Your Neighbour Has Light but You Don’t

There is almost nothing more painful than getting home after surviving a toxic workday, only to discover your entire compound is in darkness while your neighbour’s house is shining like Christmas.

You will stand outside for a few seconds; maybe your eyes are deceiving you. But once you realise, your anger is just getting started. If you’re that person’s colleague the next morning, just tread carefully.

2. Don’t Move Immediately the Traffic Light Turns Green

The second that light turns green, you have approximately 0.3 seconds to move. Anything longer and the honking competition begins.
It doesn’t matter if there’s another car in front of you or if you’re waiting for someone to cross. The people behind have already decided to use their horns to express their frustration.
By the time you get home, you’ll still be hearing honking in your dreams.

3. Start a Mainland vs Island Debate

If you ever want to start wahala in a room, just ask one simple question: “Mainland or Island?”
Mainland people defend it as if their lives and survival depend on it. Island people will laugh and remind everyone where the nice restaurants and celebrities are.

Meanwhile, everybody still crosses the 3MB.

4. Tell Them Lagosians Party Too Much

If you mistakenly tell Lagosians they party too much, you will hear all sorts. “We’re just enjoying life.” “It helps us forget our problems.”

What other response do you expect from people who live in the party capital of Africa? The truth is, Lagosians always find a reason to celebrate absolutely anything.

Birthday? Party. Naming? Party. Birkin? Definitely party. Some people have gone broke trying to keep up, but somehow, Lagosians will count it as a principle.

5. Speak With an Accent

The moment you open your mouth with a British, American or Canadian accent, somebody has already decided you’re forming, and their entire interaction with you transforms immediately.
They don’t care whether you just landed yesterday or you’ve lived abroad for fifteen years.
Don’t be surprised to hear. “Abeg, speak well.”

6. Say Lagos Is Overrated

We all know Lagos is that girl. But if you want to trigger Lagosians, just say “Lagos is overrated.”
You’ll barely finish the sentence before someone starts defending the city like they personally built the Third Mainland Bridge.
Is Lagos stressful? Yes. Is traffic unbearable? Absolutely. Will Lagosians still defend it with their full chest? Without hesitation.

7. Do Anything Slowly

Everything moves in fast motion in this city. If you dare walk slowly, drive slowly or even think slowly, you’ve automatically become public enemy number one.
In Lagos, patience is a luxury. Everybody is trying to get somewhere yesterday.

8. Say “Everything Is Too Expensive”

This is one sentence that can unite complete strangers. Mention it on a bus, in a waiting room or while standing in a queue, and you’ve just created a group discussion. One person starts talking about fuel. Another brings up rent. Someone else remembers how much bread cost in 2015.
Before you know it, you’re listening to a twenty-minute economic analysis from people who only wanted to buy bread and eggs.

9. Be Rich

The moment people find out you have money in Lagos, your peace has officially ended. They expect you to pay the bill, and expect you to tip. Even random people expect you to “show love” or “do something.”

Now, if you have the audacity to say no? Just know they’ve already started calling you stingy in the group chat. In Lagos, the quickest way to annoy people is to have money and refuse to spend it (on them).

10. Be Broke

Somehow, Lagos manages to stress both the rich and the broke. No matter where you stand financially, somebody is ready to humble you. God abeg o!
