A Night at Tarkwa: A Guide to Camping on the Beach in Lagos

Lagosians love discovering new hobbies—or should we say, jumping on new trends? While we’re not complaining, the smart ones (like you) know where to find insider gists and relevant information on what’s happening in Lagos. This time, it’s Camping.
Now, don’t get me wrong, camping in Lagos isn’t new, but lately, it has gained more awareness, with people openly documenting their experiences on social media. What was once a niche activity for a select few (especially the creatives and house music community) has now become the next cool thing.

In a city as fast-paced as Lagos, where hustle and bustle define daily life, an occasional escape is a necessity. I love that we’ve somehow found solace in camping because it’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. And if you’re looking for the perfect spot, Tarkwa Bay is where you should be.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your beach camping experience.

Getting to Tarkwa Bay

Tarkwa Bay is a small island near Lagos Harbour, which means it involves traveling by boat, and the choice of where and which to hire is entirely up to you. You can opt for a private boat at exclusive jetties, or head to CMS-Marina Jetty or Tarzan Jetty to catch a speedboat.

Here’s a rundown of things to note and keep in mind;

  • Boat rides leave from: CMS, Ikoyi (Fiki Marina), and Victoria Island (Tarzan Jetty).
  • Cost: ₦2,500 – ₦5,000 per person (round trip).
  • Duration: About 15-20 minutes across the water.
  • Go with a group for extra safety and better vibes.

What to Pack for a Smooth Experience

When camping at Tarkwa, you can either camp closer to the beachfront for a sea breeze or further inland for more privacy. Here are essentials to take with you on your adventure;

  • Pack extra warm clothes or a Hoodie,  the beach gets very cold at night
  •  Get insect repellent and sunscreen to protect yourself from mosquitoes and the daytime sun.
  •  A power bank is essential, there’s no power if you’re camping at the beachfront, cabins are a different case, but you can never be too careful.
  •  It’s important to have cash, vendors will likely not accept transfers, and you can’t rely on POS machines due to network issues that may arise.
  • Pro Tip: Travel light, take only essentials, and keep valuables to a minimum.
Where to Camp?

Various establishments at Tarkwa offer camping services, both beachfront and sophisticated camping experiences with cabins or lodges. Depends on what you’re going for.

  • Renting tents range from N15,000 – N20,000 (you can pack a blanket for extra comfort, bedding is also available)
  • Cabins and Lodges range from N25,000 – N150,000
What to Eat and Where to Get It?

Camping means food prep is key, but thankfully, Tarkwa Bay has plenty of grilled fish, suya, and barbecue vendors right on the beach. Here are tips for camping meal prep;

  • Pack light snacks like cookies and chips.
  • Bring a small cooler to carry water, drinks, and whatever specific things you’ll want along for your stay.
  • In the mood for a DIY feast? bring marinated meats to grill over the fire.
  • Some vendors will even grill fresh seafood on request, so don’t hesitate to order.
What to Do at Night?

One beautiful thing about Tarkwa? The vibes don’t need to retire with the sunset! So don’t let the night go to waste. Here are things to do at night;

  • If you’re comfortable in the water, a late-night dip under the moonlight is surreal.
  • Card games, Bonfire Stories, or other group activities you can come up with all make the night memorable.
  • A Bluetooth speaker will come in handy but don’t blast it too loud, part of Tarkwa’s magic is in the quiet.

Camping at Tarkwa Bay is a refreshing way to unplug from Lagos. it’s peaceful, fun, and a rare chance to see the city from a whole different perspective. Whether you’re going for a night of adventure, deep conversations, or just reset under the stars, Tarkwa at night is an experience you won’t forget.
